7 ways to instantly destress from work

I think it’s safe to say that we all get stressed out from work. It happens to everyone and there’s almost no way around it. However, too much stress can have negative effects on the body, so today I’m going to share my favorite 7 ways to instantly destress from work.

1) Take a hot shower.

It may seem like an inconvenience to take a hot shower when you’re in the middle of your work or your thoughts, but trust me, some times taking a hot shower can make all the difference. Hot water and steam opens up your pores and sinuses and allows your muscles to relax. There’s a reason why people say the best ideas come from when you are taking a shower. Pro-tip: I like to aim the shower head on my spine and lower back on high heat to loosen up my back muscles and mimic the sensation of having hot stones on my back. It’s kind of an awkward position being bent over in front of the shower, but it works, I swear!

2) Clean up your space.

When some people think of destressing, they think of r&r and not doing anything. For some people, being totally unproductive can actually cause more stress than relaxation. I am completely guilty of feeling this way from time to time, so I’ve resulted to cleaning up my space as a valuable way to de-stress while being productive. Cleaning up your room, desk, or entire house allows you to also clear your mind of all the clutter in your life, figuratively and literally. For me, if I’m not throwing anything away, I make sure that everything has a place whether if it’s a bin or a shelf. After I clean my space, I immediately feel more motivated, clear-headed, and equipped to take on a daunting task list.

3) Read a book.

Okay, so before you discredit this entire post because of this bullet point and you think no one reads books anymore, hear me out. I haven’t really read a book since college, and I feel like I’ve been more stressed than when I was attending school. In my own personal opinion, reading books, or reading in general gives your mind a break from looking at screens and social media. Not only that, your mind gets a little workout from processing the words on the page and making sense of it in your head. Yeah, reading books may be an ancient practice in this age of technology, but that doesn’t mean that it no longer serves a purpose to you. When you are reading for pleasure, you are reading for your own benefit. Not for work & not because you have to. A few books I recommend are The War on Art, How to Be a Bawse, and 7 Habits of Highly Effective People.

4) Do something completely unrelated to work.

I was tempted to name this tip “Do something artistic,” but then I thought that not everyone enjoys art nor has the resources to create a whole acrylic painting on canvas for fun. Instead, for at least an hour out of your day, commit to do something completely unrelated to work. This can be anything from working out at home or grabbing some snacks from your favorite cafe. For me, my favorite thing to do is edit videos for my YouTube channel. When I don’t want to think about work, I just turn on my laptop and get lost in editing my videos. Sometimes, I need more than an hour.

5) Journal it out.

If my thoughts are being extremely stubborn and I am unable to get out of my head. The only way for me to deal is to write it all down. Journaling may not be everyone’s cup of tea. Trust me, it wasn’t mine either. However, when I committed to journaling and turned it into a weekly habit, the more and more I started to love it. No matter if I was having a great day or a horrible day, my journal was always there to listen without judgement. This is why journaling has been really effective for me. I had the freedom to say and write whatever I wanted without getting judged for it. I had some really dark and destructive thoughts that I knew would get me in trouble if I told anyone about it. However, I didn’t have to worry about any of that stuff when I turned to journaling. 

6) Veg out.

On days when none of my destress tactics seem to work, I result to becoming a vegetable. Sometimes, sleeping and not moving all day is all I can really do until the stress passes. The best part is, it’s not a bad thing at all. I find that when my body feels likes this, I shouldn’t try to force myself to be productive or to get work done. In the end, I’m risking putting myself in a foul mood or lowering my quality of work. Sometimes, the best thing to do is to do nothing.

7) Hang out with friends.

When I feel like I’m in one of those situations where I am unable to help myself, I turn to my friends and family. Sometimes, the company of others is the exact medicine we need when we are stuck in our own heads. Being able to talk about something else or venting to someone you trust is a liberating way to manage stress, especially when you need another perspective.

    This was such a great read! When I don’t have a ton of time, I will hop in the shower and allow myself a little extra time for exfoliating and pampering myself a little bit. It really helps take my mind off whatever may be going on. When I have more time, I default to journaling because it gives me clarity and sometimes a new perspective/a positive outlook. I also will make lists of things I’m thankful for or things I love just to get out good thoughts! Loved reading your post!

    I always find cleaning up as the best stress reliever. It’s nice because you focus on cleaning up an nothing else. It’s quite relaxing actually.

    So many great suggestions! I always have to step away from people and my computer for a while. Hiking, hot showers, and gym sessions are always my go to ways to de-stress myself.

    These are all so fantastic ideas, and I love that they work for each different kind of stress. When you just need to stop everything, take a shower. When you need some distraction, read a book. When you need to let it out, journal. When you need to move on, do an unrelated task. There’s something to solve every problem! Hopefully this post will help people calm down before they spiral out of control.

    It’s amazing what something so simple as a hot shower can do! I also recommend drinking peppermint tea – there’s something about it that calms me right down!

      Omg yes! Peppermint tea is amazing! It also helps with bloating and tummy aches!
