This year, I had the pleasure of venturing out to Alaska with Princess Cruises and out of all the stops, Juneau was my absolute favorite. You may stop and think, “What is there to do in Alaska?”
Well, my friend, there are lots of things to do.
Cue the list!
Walk around and shop downtown Juneau!
The downtown district in Juneau had the best activities to do out of all the ports in Alaska. There are a ton of local shops and boutiques, souvenir stores, local eateries, and photo opportunities!
Go Dog Sledding at the Sled Dog Summer Camp
Did you really go to Alaska if you didn’t experience dog sledding? This was my absolute favorite thing to do in Juneau. Learning about the history of sled dogs, meeting pups from around the world, and experiencing dog sledding in person was definitely a once in a lifetime experience. I highly recommend splurging and experiencing this for yourself
Ride the tram at Mount Roberts Tramway and Nature Center
If you’re on a budget and aren’t willing to drop a couple hundred on dog sledding, a great way to spend your day in Juneau is by riding the tram at Mount Roberts Tramway and Nature Center. This tram takes you way up 1,800 feet into the mountains overlooking Juneau. It’s a beautiful sight to see, and I highly recommend taking photos. Once you get off the train, you’ll be greeted by a few eateries, souvenir shops, and activities at the nature center where you can learn more about the wildlife in Juneau and see the rescued bald eagle, Lady Baltimore!
Visit the Mendenhall Glacier
Seeing the Mendenhall Glacier is a must-do when in Juneau! This is also a budget option if you want to see more of Juneau without breaking your bank! Beware, it is quite chilly once you get to the glacier, but the views are worth it. There are a few paths you can walk that will lead you up close to the glacier and waterfalls. If trekking out into nature isn’t your thing, you can visit the visitor center where you can see an unobstructed view of the glacier, visit educational exhibits, watch a short film, and learn more about the surrounding wild life!
With the amount of life and culture that pumps throughout Juneau’s streets, there’s no question as to why this city is the capital of Alaska. There are so many things to see, eat, learn, and experience. It definitely deserves to be on everyone’s bucket list. I will definitely be visiting again!
