IMO, the best thing I got to experience in college was living in the dorms. It was almost like living in a very small studio apartment where all of your friends were your neighbors. I remembered that the coolest part of living in the dorms was visiting other people’s spaces and seeing all of their personal styles come to life. It was just like walking in a real-life Ikea catalogue. For my roommates and I, we knew that we wanted our dorm room to have a chill and laid-back vibe. We wanted people to come into our room and feel relaxed and have a good time. We had movie nights, indoor picnics, and kickbacks in our dorm. I would say that our room was one of the ultimate chill spots in the building. If this is something you want to achieve with your dorm room, check out these items that will instantly transform your dorm into the ultimate chill spot!
Almost every dorm room has a microwave in it and to be honest, they all look the same. So, why not step up your microwave game with this retro mint microwave from Daewoo? If the mint color is not your cup of tea, this microwave also comes in black and white. But in my opinion, the retro vibes of this microwave is coming from the color, itself. I have a sweet spot for retro or vintage-looking items, so if you plan on getting this microwave, prepare to heat up some delicious mac n cheese while getting some serious compliments. Blast back to the past with this microwave by clicking over here!
Another appliance that most college students swear by is having an electric kettle or water boiler of some sort. This is because you will need this for a plethora of college foods such as ramen, mac n cheese, and coffee! My roommates and I were the only ones in my dorm wing that had a kettle and we had floods of people asking for hot water for their 2am ramen. Looking back, we could have made a business out of this! But sadly, more and more people caught on to the trend and started bringing their own kettles. Either way, this is an essential tool to have, and you will definitely be the life of the party during those cold winter nights when people are in need of this hot commodity. Get this kettle here while it’s still hot!
This item is definitely a luxury item and you may not necessarily need this, but here me out! This thing does way more than just making rice. I’ve used my roommate’s rice cooker to make soup, steam vegetables, and make pot stickers! A lot of dorms do not allow hot plates or an open flame to make food, but a rice cooker is on the “OK” list and can hack the hell out of cooking food the traditional way. Thanks to a lot of sites such as Tasty, there are a ton of recipes that show you how to cook full on meals using just a rice cooker. Plus, if you buy a microwave, kettle, and this rice cooker, you could potentially replace your entire kitchen back at home! This rice cooker can cook up to 4 cups of rice which is plenty for a dorm room. It’s sleek, not too bulky, and can be bought here!
String lights are the quickest way to transform your dorm room into the ultimate chill spot no matter what shape or color the string lights are. There’s just something about dimmed, star-like lights that create such a laid-back mood. Impress Life sells the best string lights in my opinion because they have lights for so many different occasions from Halloween to beach-themed. They also have basic string lights if you wanted to keep everything universal. These lights are also battery-operated which I though was dumb at first, but now that I think about it, it’s a better option because you do not have to worry about having enough length to reach an outlet which can be very frustrating. These lights are fuss-free and you can display them anywhere! Click here to see what’s up!
There will be days when you absolutely feel like shit and want to quit college altogether. To be completely honest, what really kept me motivated was the items that were displayed on my walls. Sounds totally bogus, but for me, when I get stuck or stressed, I gravitate toward looking at my walls. If I was up at night thinking about life, I would most likely be staring up at the ceiling from my bed or out the window. When I felt sad, I would stare at my One Direction poster and I would feel less sad because Harry Styles was there telling me that I could get through this hardship (srsly!). However, if you’re not a Directioner but do not mind some wall art, these motivational posters will work wonders for you! Andaz Press makes a ton of modern motivational posters that come in a variety of colors! They are about the size of a US Letter, so you can put up a ton of quotes all over the walls without worrying about space. My personal favorite poster is the “DO EPIC SHIT” poster. It’s short, to the point, and unapologetically vulgar. I also personally love it when motivational quotes yell at me. It really puts me in check. Get one here!
Cards Against Humanity
I feel like I shouldn’t even have to put this on the list because this is a staple kickback game to play with friends. But if you haven’t heard of this game, it’s basically the adult and crude version of Apples-to-Apples. This game is always a hit at parties and kickbacks because it is competitive and brings out the absolute worst in everyone. The way to win is to be the most terrible person in the room. If you are hearing about this game for the first time, you may be thinking that this is the most twisted game on the planet, but it’s actually quite fun, especially if you have an understanding of everyone’s style of humor. There are plenty of versions of this game as well as different expansion packs, so there is no way that you will be playing the same game twice in one night. Other party games that do really well at parties are Taboo, Mafia, The Resistance, and The Voting Game. If you are more of digital gamer and have friends with smart phones, I recommend getting Jack Box! Pick up Cards Against Humanity here!
Urban Outfitters started this light box trend earlier this year, however, like most things at UO, it was a bit on the pricier side. Here is a more affordable version that you can get off of Amazon, and it serves the exact same purpose: to serve some serious modern artsy vibes! I wish I had this when I was still in the dorms so that I could customize the message to say pretty much anything like “Welcome to Room 214” or mine and my roommates names, or something random like “Ramen is life.” This is a fun decor piece to have because it’s customizable and a conversation starter for sure. This is also a great light fixture to have at house parties where there’s barely any light at all! Get yours here!
Water Drop Light
While we’re on the topic of having sick lighting fixtures, check out this water drop light! Don’t be fooled by the description from Amazon. Yes, it’s main purpose is to be a nightlight for babies and children, BUT how can you resist it’s cute face? No matter if you use this light as a nightlight or party light, this water drop light is way too cute to not have! How this light works is that you just need to lightly tap it to turn on/off, change color, or rotate colors. There are other versions of this light on Amazon as well, such as the water drop with different faces, cats, bears, moons, and mushrooms! Get the yours here!
Beanless Bag Chair
Alright, so bean bags are a popular option for extra seating in dorm rooms. However, I feel like bean bags are not college-budget friendly and messy to assemble (at least the super nice ones are). Bean bags are also difficult to transport and are quite heavy. Thus, I present to you, a beanless bag chair! This chair is totally comfortable and completely inflatable which means it’s super light, mess free, and collapsible when you need to move out of your dorm at the end of the year. Personally, I like inflatable chairs better because you can make them as firm or as squishy as you want, and if there’s no room for it, you can easily deflate it and pack it away. One caveat to this product is that it can get tears or punctures easily if not handled with care, so if you or your dorm mates are a bit on the rougher side, I would recommend opting for a bean bag alternative here! If it’s not a problem, pick up the beanless bag chair here!
Last but not least, to seal the deal on being the ultimate “chill room” is a comfortable rug! Dorm floors are not always the cleanest nor the most comfortable. Combat that by adding your own rug so that people can sit comfortably without having to worry about a 10 year old coffee stain on the dorm carpets. Of course you can get any rug that suits your aesthetic, but I really love shag rugs because they are super comfy to lay on if there’s no extra seating available. This is also a hit with overnight guests as well since it provides some extra cushion. This rug also comes in a wide array of colors, so there are many options to choose from! If you want a neutral color, I highly recommend going with the gray rug. Cop yours here!
